Why this course

Sustainability has become an essential prerequisite for sustained success amidst complex and evolving challenges. It has become a strategic necessity for businesses facing complex global dynamics.

This course delves into why sustainability has become a business imperative, how to measure and report on sustainability and an audit of existing sustainability initiatives. Armed with this awareness, businesses can embark on their sustainability journey. Partnering with sustainability experts at the Green Lights Sustainability Initiative, organisations can seamlessly integrate sustainability within their business operations.

South African leaders are being called to integrating sustainability within business operations.

Resilience in challenging times

Challenges rarely manifest in isolation. Instead, they tend to emerge concurrently with other demands that are systemically interlinked.

The COVID-19 pandemic serves as a prime example of this interconnectedness, where health concerns rapidly cascaded into intricate socioeconomic disruptions. Businesses not only had to keep their employee well-being in mind, but soon had to rethink existing business practices to enable them to navigate a socio-economic landscape rife with uncertainties.

The capacity for resilience is of paramount importance. This leads us to ask a few important questions:

  • How can businesses withstand shocks and uncertainties, while concurrently fostering growth and development?
  • How can analytical tools be used to proactively identify and address potential challenges?
  • How can leaders make well-informed decisions that align with sustainable growth objectives in a complex socio-economic climate?

Sustainability is about making more with less

Being a sustainable business means you are better able to withstand shocks to the system.

It extends beyond mere efficiency and effectiveness to include resilience. Resilience serves as a counterpoint to vulnerability, ensuring the capacity to withstand and recover from challenges.

Sustainability about finding the sweet spot between efficiency, effectiveness and resilience.

Conscious Capitalism

Striving to Benefit all Stakeholders

While it does not seek to overthrow the capitalist system, it aims to reform manufacturing and consumption to benefit all stakeholders in the system. Conscious businesses are pro-profit and free enterprise, just not at the cost of any stakeholder, thus ensuring the sustainability of the system within which they operate and themselves.

This transition moves away from the traditional Milton Friedman perspective, where the primary business objective is to maximise shareholder profits.

Instead, a sustainable approach sees businesses moving towards a model where the broader interests of stakeholders are taken into account alongside financial gains. This is often referred to as “stakeholder capitalism” or “conscious capitalism,” and requires a more comprehensive approach to business management.

GLSI and Sustainability

The emergence of new priorities means that businesses have to transform their systems, including corporate culture, foundational principles, operational methodologies, production and consumption practices, as well as the decisions made within the company, all of which collectively influence their impact on individuals and the broader context.

At the Green Lights Sustainability Initiative, our approach to sustainability is grounded in pragmatism. We provide organisations with competency and contribution certificates at each stage of their sustainability journey.

Our three-stage process is to discover, develop, and deliver a sustainable organisation. We support staff and teams understand their sustainability purpose, define intended outcomes. This enables organisations to adopt net carbon emission considerations which contribute towards decision making and strategy.

Taking a 360 approach to sustainability means that organisations develop their sustainable practices while meeting operational goals and fulfilling stakeholder demands.
